A bike mechanic once asked me if my bike was just a winter beater... I was slightly offended at this somehow. Yet when I thought about it, I realized that he was on to something... My bike allows me to consistently beat the "stuffing" out of winter. However, I don't like to refer to my bike as a "beater". It's fairly well maintained, very reliable and doesn't look too shabby either. I have no delusions as to where the bike's place in the world of cycling ultimately lies. Yet I have a great deal of affection for my inexpensive and rugged little thing. It has allowed me to thrive throughout the Canadian winter. I would mainly attribute the superb winter performance to the winter tires (soft and studded in the front, super soft in the back). This setup enables confident riding no matter what the road conditions may be. Going up or downhill on icy roads and paths is really no issue with this tire setup. The result is a pretty fit guy as he has rode virtually everyday this winter thanks to his trusted "beater".
