bought this Pinarello Montello as a frameset only from a well known dutch collector,
I mentioned it would be nice to have a Pinarello in my stable of classic road bikes in my framesize
(as I did not have one, just a 52 and a 56 size frame that I sold due to being unable to ride them)
my collector friend then said just like that 'Oh..I happpen to have a SLX tubed Montello that I am willing to sell to you as I am shrinking my collection somewhat'
On top of that it was also in one of the most beautiful colors I ever saw on a Pinarello...
a mix between dark and bright red metallic with untouched paintwork/transfers and very good chrome forks, could not believe my luck!
Built the frame up over a period of 2 months with parts that I came across and went for a first ride yesterday.
(rather appropriate; Wiggins won the tour on a Pinarello yesterday so could not have chosen a better day!)
It's a beautiful ride, very responsive and quick,a good weather only bike this will be;-)

The Vintage Bike Doc: I like your comment about you wanting to ride rather than wait until it is fully restored. I have over 200 miles on my Paganini Mistral since building it. The fork can use rechroming but it will happen sometime in the future. Good work buddy.

thank you Tim! went for a longer ride on this last sunday and it rides near perfect. Will you post the Paganini on this gallery later on too?

The Vintage Bike Doc: finally posted photos today. Appreciate comments

The Vintage Bike Doc: I will be uploading photos as soon as I can reduce the size. Thank you for asking. Tim

The only Pinarello...

The Montello is the bike I am missing. Yours look mighty fine.

Very elegant bike.

Euphemistic, but:

heel mooi!

lovely machine!

Two thoughts:

1) Unless the sticker lies, it's definitely a Montello in the first year of SLX production (the Treviso graphic refers to the town Pinarello is situated in). Treviso models were made from SL.
2) Swap that Record C seatpost for a fluted Super Record if you ever find one to complete the SR build.

1)fairly sure this is a early Montello; columbus sticker is genuine as is paint and decals. further it has the older style GP engravings in chromed seatstay caps and external brake cable routing instead of internal as per later models, therefore making it a very early model,I've had several columbus Gara and SL tubed Pinarellos, and you can really tell the difference in ride,SLX is much more responsive, this was high end in its time!
2) believe me, If I had a fluted super record seatpost lying around, I would add it,after 2 months searching for and cleaning parts I just wanted to get it ready and go for a first ride;-)

two Montello Versions

In 1985 two kind of Montello frames were available.
The frame Montello 85 and the bike Montello 85 with record or c-record equipment. The bike was equipped with internal and the frame with external cable routing.

Beautiful paint, and some really nice details in the setup, cabling, tire choice etc. Those toe-clips in particular look great and I shall hunt some down. I can also appreciate the historical timing with Wiggo - I recently took my Peugeot PY 10 for its first mountainous century on the anniversary of Tom Simpson's fateful climb up Ventoux. Enjoy this one!

thanks for commenting, your Simpson 'memorial ride'sounds wonderful!Ideally... I need to take this Pinarello out in the mountains that Wiggo rode in as well...but it wouldn't be the same without a SRM meter of course;-)

I think this is not a Montello, but a Treviso model

from what I've heard (and

from what I've heard (and this guy is a serious collector) this is a Montello dating from around 1984;-)

bb pics ?

Great bike - What does the BB tell ?

You certainly know that you can actually feel the difference betwenn SL and SLX tubes. Apart from that, it looks almost like this one here.

I guess a "SR Special" is more or less a "Treviso" + "SR" + some chrome. Some have chromed seat stays, others apparently don't.

Do you ride this in Zeeland ? I am familiar with the aerea around Veere/Middelburg. Tot ziens ! -

I've just finished building

I've just finished building it and sunday was my first short ride on it ,just back home in time to watch Wiggins get his last yellow jersey;-)
