This is my '91 Trek 700 named "Boreas." It is my attempt at a "poor man's cyclocross bike." The 700 series was Trek's multitrack hybrid line. It fit 700c wheels and centerpull cantis, so I found one on craigslist on which to experiment. In the spirit of budget building, the majority of the bike is still stock. I replaced the wide hybrid wheels with a wheelset from an old Miyata 312 and added some Kenda Kwickers. I replaced the cockpit with a cheap drop bar, some old stem shifters, Tektro cross levers, and Exage aero levers (also from the Miyata). It's a bit heavy, but that was expected. For having put so little money into it, I'm quite surprised at how well it turned out. Half the fun was getting to tinker with it during the winter break. Since I doubt I'll see any cross races here in FL, I plan to use this bike for light offroad trails and rainy commutes. Hope you enjoy it.

Update: The last two pics show my current around-town set-up. I added a rear rack and made some modifications to be able to use a couple old backpacks as poor man's panniers (in keeping with the theme).

I love it! Everything but

I love it! Everything but the stem shifters, but to each his own.

Thanks

Thanks. The stem shifters were sort of a last resort. Seeing as I was trying to keep it inexpensive, I didn't want to spring for barcons and I had these in the parts drawer. But now that I've got them on there, I like them more than I thought I would. Reminds me of my old ten-speed.

I'm sure they work, but they

I'm sure they work, but they too remind me of an old 10 speed, and that's why I don't really like them
