I have a new place of work and the commute there is almost exactly the same distance as my previous one, 20 km (12.5 miles) one way.
But the roads are much rougher. Much of it are on gravel roads and there is even a couple of km on singletrack.
My old commuter just didn't cut it, I needed something lighter and with suspension at least in the front.
I went to my LBS, violated my wallet and brought this home.

Additions/alterations to the stock bike are:
- The "Scott Urban Kit", i.e. fenders and a rear rack. The rack sits directly on the rear fender.
- The rack is compatible with Topeak's MTX bags, so I got a trunk bag where I have my spares, tools, rain gear and a change of work clothes.
- I transferred the saddle and pedals from the old commuter.
- A chain guard. It is not as much for protecting my pants (I commute in Lycra) as to protect the crankset and chain from road spray.
- The stock grips were very pretty but my hands didn't agree with them at all. They're some kind of "ergonomic" shape that only succeeded in creating some weird pressure points in my palms, so I put on a pair of my favorites, Velo Combies.
- Pro Anatomic bar ends.
- I ditched the stock aluminum bell and substituted for a brass one, only because it sounds nicer :-)
- Lights. Dinotte 1200+ up front and Dinotte 140L in the rear.
- Reflective stripes on the rims.

Commuter Sweetness!

That looks like a great bike to commute on and all the mods make sense although why not a real rack? Panniers are great things and well, is that topeak large enough and also, when packed, is it still light enough to sit on the fender? Nice drive-train too!

Sweetness indeed!

Thanks for looking!
Yes, it is all I ever wanted for my commute :-)

The bag is roomy enough for everything I need to carry. I keep a couple of shoes, trousers and jackets at work, so all I have to carry on a daily basis is the light stuff. The bag can be made bigger by opening a zipper on the top lid, that expands the bag accordion-style, for the one day a month I actually have more with me.

The fenders are super stiff and strong, made of box-section aluminum. In essence, curved alloy beams. The specs for the fender/rack combination say that it can handle a load of 25 kg (55 lbs). My max load on the rack to date was about 9 kg (20 lbs) and that was no problem at all, even on the bumpiest sections of my commute.
