My first complete build, and first wheel build!
Final weight: now 22 pounds w/o kit bag
This is an abbreviated reverse slideshow of this build. My neighbor gave me this rusted-to-death panasonic from his caved-in shed. I stripped all the parts except the headset. The bubbled rust on the chrome fork ends was scrapped, sanded, steel-wool'd etc. I steel-wool'd the whole frame to check the rust and prep for painting, then sprayed it with farm machinery touch-up paint in International Harvester White, leaving polka dots of the original finish sealed with a light clear spray. The component build-out is from the parts and sale bins of Victory Cycles in Wyoming, RI. Randy set me loose to build my first wheel and put the final finesse on it. The matching Schwalbe Marathon 27" arrived. The heavy front bars replaced the light nitto drops that were on there previously. Now the ride is VERY comfy, and I barely minded the exposed brake cable routing, but I replaced those break lever hacks with cane creek TT levers on flat TT bars.
After briefly trying to go up to 44:16 I changed my mind and tossed the fixed gear in favor of a 17t freewheel on the opposite side. Now I have a winter/hilly 17t gear and a 16t summer/racing gear. I time trialed 3 times on this bike over the summer. It's finally matured and I can't wait 'til next season.
