I always ride in the city and I tend to keep my hands just next to the stem. It is comfortable for me and I tell you more. It give me that extra steering space to avoid obstacle and it does not get on the way as much as a large handlebar. I've been twice hit by careless driver that didn't see me on their side, because the handle bar is as wide as my shoulder I manage to lean on the car and steer out of the way. To reassume a lot of rider or at least my mate ride with sown off bar. The main reason being is the added manoeuvrability in tight places like between two double decker buses. Cheers
