I got this bike a couple years ago as an introduction to cyclecross maching. I naively thought single speed would be the easiest and cheapest way to get into racing cross. Of course, after getting schooled by all the old dudes in the SS category, I love it and won't race geared any time soon. The nice thing about the FantomX1 is it's versatility. It is a single speed cross bike by name, but it has rack and fender mounts, and makes a pretty decent urban fixed gear/commuter as well. I'm currently in the process of building up a Schwinn Madison as my fun bike/commuter bike, and will convert the FantomX1 back into a cross/touring/do it all bike with fenders, racks, road drops, brakes and easier gearing.
