I'm not quite sure. I've seen 8 speed clusters on these, but not nine and my 7 speed freewheels have alot of life in them. You may want to take this question up with someone who knows about dropout spacing on older bikes and converting them to newer spacing widths. Good forum question where someone may want to weigh-in.
