Built for Dave Le Grys by Geoff Roberts, Chas' younger brother. Does anyone know much about Geoff? Sounds like there was a falling out between them - bad blood?

geoff roberts track bike

I worked in Chas Roberts's frame shop in the late 80s. I worked alongside Geoff during this period. I'm fairly sure that Geoff was working for Chas only because he needed the money.

While Chas (his brother) had his quite flash premises in Croydon, south London, England, Geoff had a workshop somewhere (in the middle of nowhere) near Brands Hatch, a motor racing track in Kent.

Having seen Geoff at work, I asked him to build some frames for me. Two for me, two for my then girlfriend, and another for a friend. After that, I asked him to teach me how to build my own frame, which, ironically he had Chas paint in his (Chas's) paint shop. I built another frame, a 15" mountain bike frame, for a friend, in his workshop.

I have tried to track him down from time to time on the Web, but with no success. I'd love to see him again. He's a really sweet guy. and a bike-frame-building genius. Also, I don't want my Geoff Roberts to be repaired by anyone else.

Hi Andrew, I have just read with interest your item about your Geoff Roberts bike! I am Geoff Roberts. I worked for Roberts cycle's from the age of 14 which was run by my father, Chas also worked for us now and then, When I was 21 my dad died of a heart attack leaving no will. In those days everything went to the eldest child ( Chas) so he had the lot and made me a mere employee although I was the cyclist and actually made the bikes and frames. Chas went from tea boy to boss overnight! At Roberts cycles there were 4 frame builders,Myself, Winstone, Adrian and Phil, all top quality frame builders. They still work there.
I left and started to build my own frames in the name of Geoff Roberts and you have one!! I did go back to help out but only to preserve the family name, not for the money. I now live in Bexhill on Sea, running a rock music venue called The Marina Fountain --find us on Facebook. I note with interest that on the Roberts Cycles website its like I never was anything to do with the business. I no longer ride or have anything to do with bikes. But will answer any questions if I can

I have those carbon rimmed Harry rowland wheels still!

Hope you are well - Want to speak to you re the music venue as i have a young band i found doing well and may hit the spot - theve not been coastal as yet :-)
