General: HED Jet 4 wheelset

I'm looking at a HED wheelset. There's a cut in carbon of the rear wheel. Here's a pic of it:



Are these are just carbon shells over aluminum rims? Will the cut compromise integrity? The seller say no, but I'm not convinced.
