I only listen to music on certain pout of my ride, when I'm riding home I do, I live up a few really big hills so the music helps take my mind of the pain.
  1.
I don't ride with it loud enough to cover the noise of others, just enough to break the silence. If I begin breathing too heavily, I can't hear it anymore.
  2.
I only hve my right earplug in so I can hear the traffic to my left. I usually listen to hip hop. Not rap (crap).

    Example Mos Def

    the best. Relaxing chill music

I agree with some of the others: I do not bike with headphones (for safety reasons), but I have been known to turn my mp3-playing phone on, leaving it in the side-pocket of my bag to add some noise to the environment (usually late-night if I am on the Lake-shore path headed home) in which case its: Sun Kil Moon, Modest Mouse, Bjork, Bach, etc.. I have a buddy who bikes with head phones and he has destroyed more than three pairs from ear-bud suicide-by-rear-spokes,-HAH!

There is a big difference between rap and hip hop. Rap now a days come up with some of the stupidest rhymes. "SUPERMAN." Hip hop has more a intellectual feeling to it. They dont talk about girls asses, all the time, or drug and gun selling.

i listen to a lot of post-rock: if these trees could talk, this will destroy you, giants, explosions in the sky, etc, on my relaxing or night rides. on my fast paced rides i listen to hardcore/punk: set your goals, suicide machines, fireworks, such gold, grave maker, bangarang!, fight fair, etc. i do the same as eddie_el_nene and ride with my right bud in and left out and my music only turned up so i can hear it just a bit over surrounding sounds. i think biking and music go hand in hand and it's quite a beautiful combination that can give your ride a completely different experience as long as your smart about your buds, music volume and awareness of your surroundings.
