vintage AMC Custom Racer 3 speed

really awesome three speed grip shifter

springed replacement circa 1975, apparently the original was a slim unsprung leather racing seat

3.3.3. internal three speed (early shimano?)

I'm really not sure about this bike i found it in my girlfriend's parents basement, they apparently purchased it used in 1975 and it was oldish than. it has a sweet grip shifter and runs beautifully after i put many long hours into it buffing out the chrome etc. anyone with information about this bike is welcome to chime in as i don't even know a year and have had a hell of a time tracking down any info on the web.
Thanks aaron.

Those shifters are very cool.

I took some apart last week at the shop. They are indexed by a ball bearing with three cups to hold it in place to provide the three gears. A spring pressures it so the bearing doesn't move once it is in place. It is a very clean design, the spring is relatively interchangeable, and the ball bearing is a regular 1/4.
