Steel, says "made in W. Germany". Badge says "Made in Austria". Whatever.

Cottered cranks (!)

Unpleasantly hard

Worn down original rubber block pedals

3 speed non-SA hub

I bought this bike used in 1979 to abuse around college. After college, I only rode it sporadically, then I completely neglected it for 10 years. In 2006 I decided to resurrect it. Then abuse it some more by riding it mostly in the winter. New tires, front axle, reflectors, frame pump, seat bag, grips, brake cable casings.

I've been looking for this bike

I am making a short film in CT and have been looking for this bike as I rode one as a kid. (And the film's about my youth)
Are you selling the bike, or just displaying it. (By the way the photo is not displaying correctly)
Either way, please contact me about the possibility of buying it or renting it for the short film in CT. This is the closest I've found this model to CT so far.

thank you

hey how do you know the year

hey how do you know the year of your bike?

year of bike

The 3 speed hub has a model number and "70" stamped on it. It's not an SA hub, but I suspect the company that made it for Sears puts the year on the hub, like SA. I bought it used in 1979, and I remember thinking that it looked about 10 years old, so I'm going with 1970.

Sears bikes

It's nice. A Sears Free Spirit. See the decal on the top tube for the little picture that shows taking the long way to get where you're going (a great philosophy). I'm finishing up a green version with chrome fenders now. It had a cassette on the back, which I changed to a single speed with a coaster brake. I'll post the pic as soon as it's finished.

Decal

Sharp eyes! You can't tell from the picture, but that decal has been significantly eroded over the decades. I remember it vividly, however.

Yes, that decal is what

Yes, that decal is what inspired me to buy this bike a couple years ago. The decal on mine has some nicks in it too but I recreated it in Illustrator so I can have an embroidered patch made for my bag. Nice to see someone else appreciates that little design.

Cool Sears Bike

I think the Double-Mint twins rode one of those.
