I thinks its because they like to have fast acceleration for spots where there is a short run up. At least that's why I like it.

hey, so why do you bmx dudes run the freaking small ass gearing? Is it just to keep a similar ratio but keep the sprocket out of the way? As much as I ponder gearing in different situations, i've always been curious about that one... When i used to run the 20"s on dirt, I ran pretty standard gearing; never even changed my chainring. Now i'm spinning 700s and usually a pretty big ring with a range of back gearing.
