This is my first fixed gear bike and I love it. This bike was originally white, but I didn't like the decals under clear coat, so I stripped all the paint off and painted it metallic black with a metallic gold under coat. I clear coated it for extra protection. Paint job came out pretty decent. The gold shows through at certain angles. Future upgrades include velocity rims, nicer quill stem and probably soma everwear tires. I'll also probably put tape on the bars, although they look sweet without tape. Ride safe!

repaint

how did you do the repaint? i'm looking into getting a windsor the hour but I'm not too fond of the decals either. Is it a difficult and costly paint project?

I started by stripping the bike of every single component (bottom bracket, headset... etc.) then used BIX paint stripper. I wouldn't recommend that brand. I hear Aircraft paint stripper works well. I ended up having to scrap and sand off the paint that wasn't removed. I used a low grit sandpaper for the paint removal and a higher grit sandpaper before painting. Once the bike was nice and clean, I layed down a couple coats of primer, let that dry, then a couple coats of metallic gold, dry, metallic black, dry, clear coat dry for a couple days. It wasn't too difficult. My mistake was using the paint stripper while it was cold out. But the project cost about -60. It's cheaper if you have the tools to remove the components otherwise it'll cost extra to have your LBS remove/install the components. I hope that was helpful.

it looks pretty good to me. was it just spray paint that you used? i'm so naive with this stuff, but slowly learning. I think I have enough tools to do the components. I just built up a fixed gear cyclocross, and i really want to try another (simpler) project. with the standard track sizing of the windsor, i can upgrade or customize periodically without the headaches of my first build!

yeah it was all spray paint.i bought two cans of primer, gold paint, black, and clear coat. just in case one wasn't enough. i returned any paint i didn't use. but the paint stripper is a goopy, toxic mess. its all slimy and you need to let it sit for quite a few hours. good luck!

advice

yo that quill stem- gotta go. I had a fuji track, which has that same stem, and I broke it on a ferocious hill climb. I was pulling up on the bars and the freaking stem bent up and the screws pulled the internal threads out. very dangerous. SO... got to nashbar.com and get one of the 1" quill to 1 1/8 threadless adapters, they're like 10 bucks, then you can put on any number of nasty black stems that will all probably be a better bet than any quill. good luck tho- its not the name of the bike- its what you do with it.

hey thanks for your advice. i do plan on changing the stem within the next week, but i think i'm going to stick to a quill stem rather than getting the adapter and a threadless stem. i like the simplicity and its clean look. i'm looking to get a black nitto or NOS cinelli stem, but its hard to find them with a 26 clamp diameter. they only have one bolt so they shouldn't fail like the stock stem. hopefully it doesn't fail on me before i get the stem ::knocks on wood::
