1986 Gan Well Pro MTB frameset
Custom-made Gan Well Pro 1986, small shop in Kyoto, Japan. Famous for their top-notch keirin framesets. Made of Tange 019.
Replacement fork; original was crowned; chopped it out in late '80s jumping it; bummer.
My brother-in-law, Kousuke Nishiji, a now retired Keirin racer, introduced me to Gan Well in 1983 when I got my first bike a couple weeks after landing there my first visit. Based in Kyoto, Gan Well is a builder/ retail shop that caters to building custom frame sets for Keirin racers. Still cranking them out apparently. This might have been their first custom-made MTB frameset; I argued with the builder for 30 min. (in Japanese, cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth) about the pros-cons of a unicrown fork vs. lugged fork; thought I had won the argument for a unicrown but ended up with a lugged fork (which got destroyed). Just repainted by Matt Assenmacher's shop in Swartz Creek, MI (http://www.assenmachers.com). Couldn't get an original decal set so I got the next best thing; Grant Peterson's (Rivendell Bicycle Works: http://www.rivbike.com) "Resurrectio" decals for just such repaints of frames where original decals are unavailable. Aren't they lovely? Yes, this was the original paint scheme. Came with SunTour XC component group. Not sure what I'll build it up with now. Will post a photo of the original condition frame before sending it in for the repaint; it wasn't pretty after 20 yrs. of hard use, mostly commuting. I decided I'd give it a 20 yr. birthday present.... still owned by Tim Potter.
