I value simplicity in the drivetrain. The idea was to build a bike like a single speed, with the versatility of gears. The 44t combined with the wide range cassette yields the same range of a compact double and a 12-25t cassette over 9 gears. I used a downtube shifter because I hate cockpit clutter plus I am weird like that.
Zipp tubular wheels are fantastic and the King hubs sound like angry bees.
The last picture is me finishing the notorious De Ronde van Oeste Portlandia, a hilly 45-mile season icebreaker for Portland bike nuts.
