Peugeot, steel, unknown model. A bit of rust showing through the paint and chrome.

Unknown aluminium bars, Atax stem

stock

Rigida 27" x 1-1/4" French chromed steel

unknown Japanese 27" x 1-1/4" chromed steel with a nasty ding

Sugino cranks, stock bottom bracket

unknown "air cushion" saddle, standard chromed steel post.

worn out steel rat traps, whatever chain was on the bike when I got it.

Sugino 52-40 chainrings, Simplex front derailleur, Maillard 5 speed freewheel with Shimano SIS

I picked up this bike for AUD at a dump shop. I ditched the drops for some lighter flat bars and swapped the perished Michelins for some cheapo Kendas. Hubs, headset and bottom bracket are re-packed and adjusted but the bottom bracket spindle needs replacing. There's a nasty flat spot in the back wheel where someone must have hit a gutter so I'm thinking of converting to 700c. I'd also like to try some bullhorns to get a few more hand positions.

There are more photos here but the thumbnails aren't showing. Click the litte black lines.

What do you reckon?

I reckon

you have a good plan. Also, maybe lose the spoke protector and wax the whole thing to a lovely shine:)

The 'pie plate' is character!

I'd leave it on and shine it up nice n' purty...

Yeah I think I'll leave it

Yeah I think I'll leave it, I like the chrome. Besides, I've put more than one derailleur into the spokes in my younger (stupider) days. There's a bit of rust bubbling through the paint in some spots, is there anything worthwhile I can do about it?
