Lyotard alloy flat pedals (quills are ok if you want to support the shoe industry...)

52/42x18-12 (shimano 600 rear)

Absolutely new unused racer from Meral, miraculously survived in full original condition with only the very best Campagnolo etc components. The biggest kick apart from owning a brand new real racer 30 years old is building up a little speed, and ever so casually sailing past MTB geeks in full racing lycra "sponsorized "clothes who are absolutely flat out on 5000 buck machines with tractor tyres. I will even go as far as to hide behind a tree or else until a victim comes my way, let him past, then just after the crest of a hill give ten hard kicks on 52x14 and breeze past him at high speed. Am I a pervert or is this normal behaviour?

The only mods are chopped/upsd bars, Lyotard street pedals, cheapo saddle and rubbish brake levers (front brake to right hand). The brakes are Modolo Corsa.

If you're into handbuilt classics, like fully fitted 8 kg cyclotourists or featherweight racers from René Herse, I reccomend you look at some serious bike porn at http://www.reneherse.com/

48x14 is pretty stiff for a singlespeed gear. If you have the legs for it, then rock and roll. Personally I would go for 42x16 or 42x14 if you are so inclined - spin to win!

dilemma

Yep 48x14 is getting serious but it's really flat around where I live, I reckon most days I could push that, though I'd be really slow off the mark. The eternal worry with a singlespeed in urban areas is the compromise between take-off speed and cruising speed, so yep again, you're right a 42x14 should be be nice and I could keep the Stronglight 42 already on the bike. Anyway, it's not going to be my every day machine for zipping round town in traffic: for that I have built me a serious tool from a undersize Peugeot MTB sloping frame, with 26x1.50 slicks, back vee_brake coupled to a long cantilever brake lever, centerpull front with racing compounds, 21 indexed gears, and loads of really flashy show-off components. The geometry makes it a rocket for fast starts and you can throw it anywhere, including down steps (ok, not more than 10 steps without running the risk of seriously compromising your social life...). Thanks for the advice !
