3/24/2008:
I received my first ticket today. The only thing is, I wasn't driving my car.
I was riding my bike.
I was in the bike lane about to cross the W Call St/Stadium Dr intersection to get on campus when I saw an SUV up ahead about to make a right turn. The bike lane is on the right side of the vehicle, so I tried to adjust and prepare to pass the person around the left as it turned, but the person never made the turn.
I crashed into the the left side of the rear bumper at full speed, causing the hub of my front wheel to be completely stripped from the axle and fork. In effect, the sudden impact caused me to fly/flip with my bike into the intersection. It happened so fast.
When I got up, my bike was ten feet away from me, and the front wheel was somewhere else. My right pedal managed to spin off and land in the grass next to the sidewalk. I managed to walk away with a sore right shoulder, sore left knee, minor abrasions on my left wrist and right ankle, and a huge headache. When I reached into my back pocket to use my phone, I noticed that I had a hole on the outside of the pocket.
My phone literally saved my ass.
Now for the ridiculous part:
The police officer reported the total estimated vehicle damage caused to both my bicycle and the vehicle. 0 for my bike and for the SUV. On my own, I was able to cause a total of 0 in property damage from crashing my bike. NICE.
The officer then gave me a traffic citation for careless driving. The amount of which is 3.50. SHIT!
So tomorrow I'm going to see if going to traffic school would really be worth it. If not, I'm just going to have to pay the whole fine and "earn" points on my license.
I'm pretty sure I'm now one of a rare few who could say they rear-ended the hell out of a vehicle with their bike.
