MKS RX-1 Gold edition

46/21

This is my commuter bike, it has the basics for a great everyday bike.

It came well equipped with hub gearing and dynamo, effective fenders and lighting.

My prime objective is to get ALL plastic off the bike!

First upgrade was the Brooks saddle for comfort.
Next came the MKS pedals, what an improvement! The one stock pedal had a bad bearing.
Just received a nice brass bell from Velo Orange, to replace the tin/plastic ugly bell.
There is plenty of room between the fenders and rim for FAT wheels, so I may try out Schwalbe (40-50mm size!) tires for a smooth ride.

Future projects:
-Replace solid rod rear rack with a tubular of my own design, as well as fabricate a front tubular rack with integral light mounts.

-Replace the Shimano shifters with a 'Trigger' paddle shift of my own design. Basically mimicking the shifting technique you see on F1 race cars - right trigger will up shift and left will down shift. Remember I have hub gearing, so that I don't have to worry about shifting both front and rear dérailleurs.

Inspirations:
The classic details of Daniel Rebour, Jitensha honesty, Velo-Orange, track bikes, Keirin/NJS

Removing the plastic

Since you're looking to get rid of the plastic on your bike, and you are already familiar with the excellent Velo Orange shop, I highly recommend some hammered HONJO fenders!!! Your bike is crying out for them!

That is a pretty commuter bike -- looks very functional and has a great pea-soup color.

Double Boing

I have a Conquest spring saddle on my old Stumpy and it's quite boingy as it is ... isn't this setup just ridiculously over-sprung with the squishy seatpost?

Good idea about the paddle shifter, but how would this be better than the Shimano, in practice? Nice ideas so far.

Pogo stick!

Thanks for the comments.

I already have a Nitto 65 Dynamic seat post waiting in the wings. I am new to commuting by bike and my butt took a beating for the first 3 weeks! I think I am ready to swap it out...

As for the 'trigger shift', if I put the Shimano shifter on a bullhorn bar, the distance between that and the brake lever is greater - I would have to move my right hand back and forth to shift and brake.

With a trigger shift, I can have bar end reverse lever brakes, and have the shifters adjacent; I wouldn't have to move my hands to shift or brake!

I will mock something up in the next few weeks and post up some photos.

Cool!

Good luck. Sounds like a nice idea -- have the bar you want without sacrificing convenient shifting. PS I love the Conquest. It's narrow enough to shift behind and still comfortable with the springs -- takes the edge off my old hardtail Stumpjumper. Cheap conversion to "full suspension."
