I found this bike on CL this summer, and have been slowly turning it into a light touring rig. The handlebars that were on it when I got it were cruiser-style thingies which I switched out with mtb style bars w/ bar ends. That worked until I found that my fingers got numb at around mile 40. I just put on the randonneur bars this weekend.
This bike is my commuter vehicle -- we do 16 miles, M-F, up and down crazy hills and potholed roads. It is the first bike I have ever worked on myself.
