I rehabilitated this classic MTB by getting rid of the shifters and derailleurs and cassette (they were totally shredded anyway) overhauling all the bearings, and putting on a spacer/cog/tensioner kit, drop bars, and Tektro aero levers. I've been using the 46/18 gear combo for basically all my riding, and I can muscle it up the steepest sections of the fire roads that I ride (but just barely). Handles surprisingly well when riding in the drops (which is basically where I ride unless I'm standing, climbing...then I use the hoods.)
Thinking about getting a 42T chainring and a used 8-speed cassette/derailleur/shifter setup to convert to a 1x8 speed.
