LeTour manufcture date

Can anyone tell me the date on a Schwinn Le Tour with this number stamped on the rear dropout - SF225619. Thanks for any help.

dating

the schwinn head badge will have four numbers lightly stamped on.
the first 3 numbers are the day of the year it was produced and the last will be the last digit of the year it was made.
so 2158 would be the 215th day of the year 19*8 so figure out the decade and you are golden.

Any plans?

ID'ing Bike years

If the crankarms are origional to the bike you can usually narrow the year of the bike down via the dates on the crankarms.
www.vintage-trek will bring you up to the link for determining date of mnfg on a ton of crank arms.
I've got an 80 LeTour Tourist IF you have the sugino maxi crankset (with the fixed outer chainring and chaingaurd) look for a letter number combo on the back of the crank arm.
The letter corresponds with the year (in my case the J=1980) and the number the month.

this is that i found on the

I'm not sure, but I called Schwinn, and they could not help me (or at least that's what they said)

Can somebody help me with what year this bike is?

My dad bought it cheap third hand 16+ years ago, got rid of the rust, replaced the gears with a nicer set, and I think the wheels too.

I am pretty sure it's from the early 80s, but would love to know exactly what year it really is.

Thanks!!!!

Mastronaut has it right. The

Mastronaut has it right. The Le Tour was introduced in 1974 with the decals shown on your bike. The decals were changed in 1977, so yours has to be a '74, '75, or '76.

Here's a URL with the 1975 catalog page. I tried to make it a link, but it didn't work, so you'll have to copy and paste it into your browser.

Year...

check the bottom bracket and /or tubes for any stamped numbers...you will be able to know based on those...

I'm really new to this,

I'm really new to this, what/where is the bracket?

The bottom bracket is the

The bottom bracket is the part of the bike that the cranks/pedals rotate around. Flip the bike over and look at the part of the bike frame between the cranks - that is the BB. There should be some letters/numbers down there.

Here is a webpage with some parts labeled: bike map

Also...

Schwinn stamped the numbers on the dropouts between 1952 and 1969 ... this is the part of the frame that holds the rear wheel ... you may need to remove the wheel to see them ... which you will have to do at one point or another to do a thorough cleaning/checking of the bike ...

My guess is you'll find the serial number on the lower left of the headtube(by The Schwinn Badge On The Front OF The Frame) which would place it between 1970 and 1982

thanks so much!!!

Check out this page - serial

Check out this page - serial numbers for Schwinn Letour's found on the lower left dropout (scroll down to table about 1/2 way down the page). Looks like your's may be a November 1960 made in Japan.

Good luck!

WOW, so does the initial 4

WOW, so does the initial 4 not matter.

I'm sure it's Japanese, because it says japan in a lot of places

that's awesome, Thanks!!!

Lugged non-Paramount Schwinns are Japanese.

They were made by Panasonic and some by Bridgestone. The serial # is likely located on the bottom bracket. I am not sure that Schwinn dating codes apply to the Japanese manufactured frames, but there are Schwinn serial number databases on teh internets. I bet it starts AL and not 4L and that would be January 1975. It sure as hell isn't a 1960.

It's worth about -5 bucks. It would be worth more if it had aluminum rims.

Thanks for the help!!!
