I was a big fan of the Vitus aluminum frames and when I came across this Peugeot-branded Vitus frame issued for Peugeot's Tour De France team in 1984 I had to jump on it. The thing was in NOS condition when I got it! So I built it up with (mostly) French components and tried to make it as "fast" as I could. Sew-ups, bladed spokes, aero rims, drilled chainrings, lightweight saddle. Not every part is of the era but I don't care. She rides beautifully and weighs in at 19 lbs, 3 ounces (built as is in the pictures).

P.S. My least favourite part about working on this bike is adjusting the Mavic 451 brakeset with the dual hidden spring (a rebranded Dia-Compe BRS-500). When they work, they work great but they are the epitome of the term "over-engineered".

Wow

Like it heaps. I always think the seatpost should match the stem colourwise, but you just proved you can colour code the saddle with the stem instead. I like how you tried to keep the build French oriented. Although there's not one set of Mavic brakes that's not rebadged Italian or Japanese ;) I'm building a Vitus 992, I'd be happy if it turns out half as nice as your 979. Also have a Vitus ZX-1 so you might want to take a look at my profile if Vituses are what makes you tick :)

Great looking machine! Is

Great looking machine! Is there any concern with the aging aluminum frame to oxidize or is it clear anodized? Like the others mentioned, the gold really makes the rest of the bike stand out in a very nice way.
Cheers

the frame was still wrapped

the frame was still wrapped in factory plastic when i acquired it so it was in pristine condition.

the main tubes are anodized brass/nickel for the Peugeot Team.

the headtube, bottom bracket shell and seatpost clamp are not anodized and might see some pitting in the distant future.

Gorgeous

What a fantastic bike!

Beautiful bike. I'm looking

Beautiful bike. I'm looking for something similar right now!

Really clean! And the gold

Really clean! And the gold saddle really adds something to it. Sweet bike!

Good looking -- and the ride?

My GF has a Vitus 979, and she loves it. Have always heard that the frames are whippy, though, and have seen suggested rider weight limits in the 160-pound territory. How does yours ride for you?

rides great!

i've heard that about Vitus frames too. when you exert tons of torque into it i'm sure there's a little bit of flex but i guess you trade something in for the weight loss. i've been riding on Vitus frames for years now so there must be something i like about them. anyone who naysays can look up Sean Kelly's or Robert Millar's success on these frames. i have a few friends who are fans of the Vitus 979 as well. how does your lady like it?

it's her favorite

She won't ride anything else. Big drama: Once her bike's frame got tweaked by an idiot driver trying to park (no, cars shouldn't go up on curbs, but this one did) and she thought it was a goner. I found H.H. Racing, though, they can do anything with bonded aluminum frames. It came back perfectly straight and true. She was beyond thrilled.

That's a really good-looking

That's a really good-looking bike top to bottom. The gold nicely complements the tubing, which reminds me of nickel.

Nice looking bike :)
