I started with a (surprisingly inexpensive) complete single speed road bike from nashbar about a month ago. Over the past couple of weeks, because I'm impatient to get things the way I want them, I rattlecanned the frame, bought a fixie cog, and switched out the handlebars/brake levers.
It's a pretty sweet ride, if I do say so myself.
