Bought this off of craigslist today and when I got home I realized the drive side rear dropout was almost closed shut. Does anyone know how to fix this? Would heating it up and hammering it straight do it? Also, can anyone tell what model this is? The guy said it was from the 80s but didn't know the model.

i hope you didnt pay much for it. the seatpost may come out if you attach a saddle and pull, and have a friend pull. good luck!

thanks for all the advice. After doing some more research, I'm pretty sure it is a super. I'm probably going to try to do it cold and then if I mess it up, I'll take it to a Bilenky or Havnoonian. the seat post, though, is seized. Can anyone give me any advice to get it out?

if I were to guess I would say that your frame is from the late 70's super. The fact that the cables run over the top of the BB shell, the braze ons for the rear brake, and the fork lead me to believe that. If you end up needing a new drop out and want to come to ncy, let me know. I have a frame builder friend that is replacing the chainstay on my master. He also did a great job painting my 74 super pista!

I agree that you should stay

I agree that you should stay away from heat. Heating it up and then cooling the metal off will make the metal frail. I would take it to a local metal shop (an easy feat living in Buffalo). But a bike shop would also have a better idea. I bent out the dropout on my fork with a tool as simple as a crowbar. Good luck. Fun Project.

Dropouts are surprisingly soft, thus the bend. I would stay away from heat and *very* gently and slowly move the end of the dropout back to where it should be. Even a long, broad-tipped, regular screwdriver would work, as it would give you the leverage and control you need.

Yeah, I fixed a friends

Yeah, I fixed a friends frame that came bent like that, only it wasn't as bad. I didn't use heat to fix it, but it might make it easier.

Dropout Problem

That bent dropout has happened to 2 or 3 or my bikes during shipment. My LBS carefully bent each one back into shape without using heat. Of course, there's always the possibility when you're bending metal that it could snap. But that didn't happen to any of mine. I didn't watch them carefully as they worked on mine, but I can ask them for details if you'd like.
