It's been at the repairers for a while now - new downtube, new dropout. Unfortunately I lose the original paint (this kills me) but this bike deserves to be ridden, and that's the price. Hopefully I'll be riding this classic within a year. Almost all original parts - Campagnolo, Magistroni, Mafac and Brooks. The wheels are from early/mid 60s.

i think

you should just replace the tube, clear it and keep the rest of the paint original.
but i've always been partial to the half-done look on bikes that function flawlessly.

I hear you. I suggested that

I hear you. I suggested that too, but the guy doing the work is a bona-fide expert and he assured me that so little of the original paint/chrome would be able to be saved that it wouldn't be worth it (that crack isn't from an impact, so he had to do other work to ensure it wouldn't happen again). I've had to trust his opinion.

Personally, I'd prefer it as original as possible. Not much of a fan of the "Botox beautys". But on the plus side, I won't have to baby it as much as I would have.

ah, for sure

Decals

I purchased a set of Pinarello decals from this seller before, and have been really happy with how they turned out. A little pricey, but he really nails the look with his products, plus they are a lot more resilient than a set of original.

also. awesome bike. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Ouch

Ouch. That's a nasty crack in the down tube. Please post pics when you get it back from the restorer.
