Raleigh Grand Prix bike parts

A 1972 Grand Prix was my first 10 speed, very nice 28 lbs bike, and was possibly the #1 selling U.S. lightweight of 1970-75.

If you have an early model with the white Carlton hoods, definitely save the brake levers as the hoods alone are worth - in good condition, twenty bucks, as is the GB stem. The raleigh #501 chrome steel quill pedals can be rechromed and they are also a valuable part. The 1973 and later bikes had normandy sport hubs (worth very little, only worth ten to fiften a pair) and steel rigida rims (worthless). The carbon-steel frame weighs 8 lbs, about 1.5 lbs heavier than a 531 frameset in a similar size. The Nervar cranks are not worth much, even in pristine condition, but if your model is earlier and has stronglight cranks, again they should be saved (in any rusted condition) and resold on ebay for the purpose of rechroming.

Color Code for 1977 Raleigh (Nottingham) Grand Prix

Hi!

I'm new to the forum. Was wondering if anyone knew how to find the color code of my older (1977) Raleigh Grand Prix 10-speed. I'm looking for the particular color of the top frame member, which has the "Grand Prix' emblem on it. It's a medium-to-dark blue. I found an import color at the nearest auto parts store, which is a type of emerald blue clearcoat, but it isn't an exact match. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

my bike

I am not sure what year this is, if anyone knows let me know. What would you recommend I do to this bike, is it worth fixing up as in repaint, regrip, clean, or is it better to just clean it up and not put the money into it? I bought it for 40.00$, i think i got ripped off, and i doubt i could turn a profit on this thing. As for repaint, i was considering a british racing green with silver on the joint accents.

Raleigh

I have a similar bike, same colors and decals. Mine is a 1978 or 1979 with a 1977 Tour de France Team Winner 1977 decal at the top of the down tube. I suspect that with the proper downtube clamp-on friction shifters and new cables you bike might be worth well over twice what you paid for it. My advice would be to retain the original color scheme. It think it is a great looking bike. I'd be interested in the information on the decal at the top of your seat tube describing the tube material, if yours is still readable --mine has flaked to nothing. I think you have a good bike and a keeper.

Decal

My Decal reads:

Raleigh Carbospec

45-11
Frame Tubing

reply

since this is my first fix, i decided to repaint the bike, grey/silver as the original. i scraped off all the decals, they were not in good shape, i could read the sticker, but unfortunately i dont remember what it said. I know, it was a bad decision not to write it down. It was something like 80/20 ti/raleigh steel, and it has the same 1977 winner decal. The bike is primed and ready to paint, but I think ill change the blue to red. pictures soon

Tube decals

I bought a pair of these today (man & woman). The decals at mine says 20-30, whatever that means. Though, mine might be around 1971-1972.

Grand Prix

I found a Raleigh Grand Prix for a cheap price and bought it, I'm just looking to find out more about it. It has Sturmy archer hubs an the frame Is old, I justarted to refinish it and all that, the hardware was all rusted off, so just a frame now.
