32/12 with a Gussett SS Chain Tensioner

I saved up my allowance for a year to buy this bike when I was in 5th grade, so there is no way that I can ever part with it. The frame is way to small for me, but I tore it down, and built it back up as a single-speed snow-day commuter, and all around utility bike. With some creative modifications (i.e., zoom q stem adapter, 110mm x 35 deg upshot stem, 65mm Rise bars), it actually fits my 6'2" frame pretty well. As always, your thoughts are welcome!

People who friended this bike CONDENADO

you are smart

to not part with this bike. I saved for a year in 6th grade, bought my first real bike (a french road bike called a Bertin). I kept in for over 20 years and then got rid of it to make space in our garage. What a huge mistake. I shoulda kept it.

ooooooh

I didn't realize that they were vertical. I learned something today! I had always been told it was super hard to convert a frame w/vertical dropouts to a ss/fg, but it works better with a chain tensioner?

It's hard only because you

It's hard only because you have to fiddle with gearing (usually by swapping out different cogs, or by swapping chain rings), and you often have to use a half-link, which is still no guarantee that you will have proper tension (plus you will have a HELL of a time getting that rear wheel off!).

On my Fisher SS (2008 Mullet) I have an eccentric BB which eliminates all of these problems. I love eccentric BB's.

Chain tensioner?

Why do you have a chain tensioner? Isn't that completely unnecessary for a SS/FG?

Only if you have horizontal

Only if you have horizontal dropouts so you can adjust the chain tension. The only time a chain tensioner isn't necessary with vertical dropouts is when you have gears, because the derailleur takes care of that business.

On a side note- you were taller in 5th grade than I am at age 25.

I am pretty sure I could get

I am pretty sure I could get away without the chain tensioner if I had a half-link, and more time/cogs to screw around with it.

Ha...yeah, I am about 6'2" now. I am happy that I was able to resurrect my first bike! Thanks for the comments!
