Your Colnago

I have one just like this and it is complete with a Campy Super Record Group. The stem is a black TTT with Colnago engraved on it. I have wanted to upgrade but I don't even ride it enough to warrant the expense. I bought my new but, I don't remember what year I bought it, but it was a long time ago. On the 9 or 10 speed combinations why do you even need this, if you look at the gearing some of these gears overlap, but I might be wrong. Danny

yeah, you have to go with

yeah, you have to go with campagnolo. i've seen old italian road bikes built with new campy, and it looks great.

I don't know which level you

I don't know which level you want, but you definitely need a campy group. Shimano looks too tacky on a nice old italian frame. I don't know if I've ever seen a Sram group on one, I don't think it'd work though.

re: build

you definately need a campy super record gruppo: the derailleur should be w silver campy logo over black. the gearing should be 53/42. or, you could sell the frameset to me! i have the complete gruppo for it, including original gum lever hoods:}

Mmmm; might be a Super

(scan at bulgier.net)

I suspect the the eBay listing has guessed wrong (and the old-guy handlebars don't do that build any favors, IMHO). But early/mid-1980s seems like the right time window; check some of the other Colnago catalogs at http://www.bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/ (especially http://www.bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/colnago-88/07a.jpg) for reference. The first question is: What's the rear dropout spacing? 120mm is earlier, obviously; 126mm is later.

To get it all modern, you'd have to cold set the rear dropouts. You have a beautiful, clean period frame; maybe there's a higher ethical responsibility here.

I'm guessing the dropouts are 126mm - 6/7-speed. I'd say: Build it up with Campagnolo Super Record or C-Record at the latest. Downtube levers; friction shifting. Who knows? If you can find a set of Campy Delta brakes for cheap...

And you'll find that putting together a 70s/80s Super Record or 80s/90s C-Record-ish gruppo is often a lot cheaper than a modern 8/9/10-speed Campy gruppo. My late '80s Bianchi build was assembled out of bits and pieces I scrounged from eBay/Craigslist/SF Bay Area swaps; a little under 300 bucks for parts, including the C-Record wheelset.
