You mean the stem mounted shifters/ Gut-rippers?
They're original to the bike and while I usually ride at 4-1 I like to drop it to 4th or maybe 3rd for hillclimbs.

before i converted my peugeot, it had stem mounted shifters and whenever i was climbing hills my knees would bump into them and drop me a gear or two. seemed like better placement at first glance to me but i was sick of 'em pretty quick.
