I know little about this Schwinn Super Sport - I found it sitting in a man's driveway with a bent rear wheel and shredded bar tape. All I knew was that the Univega I had set out to buy from him was no longer an option - when I saw the Schwinn sitting there, it was going to be mine. He was reluctant to sell it at first, but after fifteen minutes of talking he agreed to let it go for eighty dollars.

And here it is.

What started out looking a bit weathered now looks pretty good, if I say so myself. With new bar tape, a shiny new brakeset, new wheels, and a Selle Italia to top it off, the Schwinn's become a bike that I simply love riding. There's something about the old Suntour mechs that makes shifting a blast even after twenty-odd years.

I'm pretty proud of it. It's a quick and fast commuter, and eats up the hills at 21 pounds. The most recent addition is a Campagnolo Zonda aero front clincher that I picked up on Craigslist for the unbelievable price of ten dollars.

All in all, I like it. :)

These are great bikes -- definitely worth keeping and restoring. I have a very similar one to yours -- probably a 60cm frame, but the color scheme, badging, and components are near identical. In particular like the Sugino Aero crank, which was (I assume) a riff on Shimano's Dura-Ace AX series. Very lovely in its own right, however.

It's my understanding that these were made in Japan for Schwinn. Most people say it was made by Panasonic, but I found a Nishiki on eBay that had nearly idential frame details, including the Suntour Pro dropouts, overpainted chromed stays, semi-wraparound seatcluster lug, and above-the-bottom-bracket cable guides. In any case, a lovely bike, and a beautiful rider.

When I finish restoring my Super Sport, I'll put it up on the site.
