This is my first bike build -- an early 80s Raleigh USA Marathon. The frame is the rare-ish 575SL triple-butted chromoly. It's as light as my 531, and very, very stiff. Had a local shop do the black powdercoat, while the gold detail work is mine. Also of note are the 27" wheels with the 27x7/8" Avocet slicks, which I got through the late great Sheldon Brown's store. These tires plus the frame make for a bumpy ride, but it works well with the fixed drivetrain, as you get a good feel for what's below.

I wanted to make a bike with bullhorns that nevertheless evoked a vintage feel. Aside from the rear wheelbuild, all the work is my own. Overall I'm quite happy.

Depends on the sticker.

Depends on the sticker. These USA raleighs either say 501,502, or 575 (maybe others I dont know about). The 501-02 are your standard Chromoly frames -- the 575 is the lighter version.

Definitely worth the extra time to hunt down a 575, as they're fairly common and don't have the demand/cost of a Rynolds 531. The 501-02 are fine for most uses, but the 575 is noticeably lighter.

HTH.

great looking bike. thats what i want to accomplish

True classic Raleigh spirit

With the headbadge, black paint and gold trim it kind of evokes those classic old Raliegh 3-speeds I used to love. Really well done. Nicely updated without losing that elegant, classic look. Thumbs up.
