16 49 - way too big! Need to downsize for the hills to work,

You fellas were right in the end, there was no need to spray it. I managed to get some original chrome merckx chrome forks from a great UK merckx contact (and mechanic!)

Fork?

I'm looking to do the opposite of what you've done with your fork. Any chance you could help me out in locating a Merckx track fork? I have a road fork but I'd like to locate an original. Thanks! mark@sisuhome.com

The Merckxster

Finally built. No respray in the end. Love it to bits.

Spectacular

I am so glad you didn't respray! It is perfect.

oh man !

You do what you want but an eddy merckx track frame to repainted is unthinkable . but hey it your property . it's not like anyone can tell me what to do either . but it's so nice right now . ahhhhhhhhhhh .

Of course you should do what

Of course you should do what makes you happy...personally, I think the paint looks great -- and it's only original once, you can never go back! Maybe sleep on it for a bit? Congrats on winning such a great frame!

why why why

My thoughts exactly. From what the pictures show the paint is in VERY GOOD condition. Why would you want to respray it or add chrome? This frame didn't come with chrome so why would you want to add it? What is meant to be is meant to be. Even if you did have the whole thing redone (quite expensive) you will always have the nagging feeling that your shi's not original. Isn't that the whole point of buying a classic frame?

the respray debate

I hear what you're saying but although the frame looks fine in these photos it has quite a bit of rust in places, some deep chips and some scratches that go down to the metal if you look close. I'm just getting it restored. I've seen Merckx frames of the same era with chrome stays etc - there's one on here.

Re-spray...

What color?

Respray

Same colour but I'm gonna get the rear stays chromed and the fork crowns chrome. Looking for some merckx road forks if anyone knows of any around?

Beautiful frame

Nice frame - that'll build up nicely. Any planys for gearing, etc?

Gearing

Hi - thanks for the comment. I've got a '49 front ring I don't know about the back yet... I live in London and the ride to work will be a bit hilly so I want something not too hard. Any advice? Cheers Jon

are you sure you havent

are you sure you havent built this up yet? I saw a dude on an identical frame down brick lane today........
