speedplay x/5 and newer 9 spd shimano

put a newer 9 spd sram cassette on the back and a shim 105 rear der. that I had laying around.

rides great! super quiet and smooth. shifts cleanly. brakes are a little weak. new bar tape makes her sweet! climbs like a champ. pretty stiff and light. Tried the original suntour rear der. with the 9 spd cassette and it couldn't quite handle it. Originally designed for 12 spds.

Nice! I had that very model in high school. I used to ride from Rhode Island to Maine every year on it.

brakes are a little weak

Nice bike!

Koolstop salmon brake blocks will give a big improvement in braking, especially if you happen to have very old pads on it now.

I'm impressed that you friction shift 9 speeds!
