50-42-30/24-14 (sachs huret Duo Pack derailleur, best ever made !)

A very, very high quality long distance touring machine from the early 80's. At the time cost as much as a good small car.

Anyway, a lovely machine to ride in bad weather, there's a limit to showing off with flashy racers and track machines, and when you need a bike to ride come whatever, this sort of thing is hard to beat. Lovely cable and lever operated "Dynapower" dynamo under bottom bracket, mafac 2000 brakes, etc. I couldn't face riding the Brook's Professional which had broken in and set to fit the original owners buttocks: as he obviously had a rather large parting, the saddle had a ridge which was threatining to ruin my social life, hence a plastic saddle for the time being...

um

not to be rude ...
but i would NEVER call a bike a BEATER if it had a factory chrome front rack w/ headlight and chrome fenders. I'm sorry, Valeo, but you can't pick your parents, you just can't. Verbal abuse can scar the whole family. Make it stop.

no offense

OK, I use "beater" in the apparantly mistaken sense "everyday ride come whatever" bike. The bike will be well cared for, but not kept in a perpetual state of sparklingly polished brilliance. The rack is fab, yes. It's awaiting some period quality bags. As to the fenders, they're going, the back one has got a case of corrosion. Aluminium, period, will be my choice, and a Jos back light too. By the way, it's not Valeo, but Daleo: as the bike is a Meral, and the "Daleo" logo is an aftermarket transfer, I guess Daleo was either the owner or a builder who upgraded the machine, cause it has some pretty mind_boggling non-standard gear on it. Anyone got info about Daleo ?

Marcel: Your stable is

Marcel:

Your stable is wonderful. You have a fantastic collection of bikes, thankyou for sharing all of them with us!

Thank you, Greg !

Greg, I forgot about bicycles many, many years ago when I got into motorcycles. It's your site got me interested in bikes again.

I still aim to build me a fixie or single speed: can you or anyone on this site tell me what's available in the way of decent quality 230 mm flipflops or freewheel hubs which would line up with the outer chainring on a 10 or 12 speed racer, which'll be be the basis I'll build around ?

Fantastic site, Greg, thanks. And, yes, I'll add a few more to help contribute to the 1000 bike campaign!
