same! it's rediculous. i talked to this one girl who was infuriated by aerospokes because she thought they cost over a grand and rich hipster kids just rode em to show they had money. this is the case at times but otherwise she was completely off.
i like switching stuff up and i'd admit to wanting to try one out if they were half the weight and still durable.
kind of pointless though as this isn't the case. -

Posted By: danzap209So what's the best carbon fiber wheel?
Best for what purpose? It depends on what race and frame you're riding; and if you're not racing, a carbon wheel is not the shrewdest way to use resources. Even if you are, different wheels are best suited for different purposes; the best carbon wheel for a hill climb is not the same as the best for a time trial. And I'll go out on a limb and suggest that riding a carbon wheel offroad is a big ol' waste of money.
What do you want to do? -

come on now. stop trying to mislead everyone, its not fair to keep all your aerospok truing techniques to your self.
what you need to do is:
step 1) pull all those super fly mash and apple stickers off your wheel.
2)preheat oven to 350* (400* mountain).
3)heat wheel until it is just barely pliable, check often you dont want the wheels surface to actually feel soft, but you should notice a little more give than normal. patience is key here, it should only take 15-20min tops. make sure to wear gloves AND CHECK IT FREQUENTLY!
4)once the wheel is adequately heated quickly move it to a truing stand (if you don't have one use and old fork, or frame in the case of a rear aerospoke), gently apply equal pressure on both sides of the wheel, on--or near the braking surface, especially in the area which appears to have a lateral "wobble." a vertical "hop" is a little more difficult to fix, but if you time it just right as the wheel spins give it a respectable hit with a rubber mallet (do not use a normal hammer, you could damage you aerospoke's structural integrity).
this process should be done quickly to avoid too much cooling, although it may sound difficult the results are well worth it. if at anytime the wheel feels as if it is becoming unworkable simply reheat it in the oven for a few minutes.
5)when the aerospoke seems to be laterally and vertically true you must quench the wheel, in order to set your results. i have found that this is best accomplished in a bathtub full of ice water, but you could probably just hose it down too, as long as you apply the water relatively evenly.
i know this may not be for everybody but it produces quite astonishingly respectable results. -

I'm sick of people dissing Aerospokes. They try to be useful but if the weight puts you against it than that's fine, but if you diss the design of it being aero, you're wrong. The design is like that of the MAVIC I0, a similar 5 spoked wheel of a different composite that is used on the track so it's stable. It's still "Aero"dynamic even though the weight is the factor that most people use to dismiss it.
on another note, it should only be used in the front because of it's "aero"dynamic qualities to have at least any benefit. I don't see why people put them in the back. -

so pretty much: if they redesigned it so it was like a mavic io and it didn't suck, then it would be like a mavic io? is that what you are saying? -

This guy is trying market Aerospokes as carbon fiber wheels.... Here's what he sent me.
All the products you know as carbon fiber are in fact made of composites. That is to say they are made by dispersing carbon fibers in a resin matrix to form a composite. This is the way Aerospoke wheels, Formula 1 cars and the space shuttle are made. Agreed, not all composites use carbon fibers. Glass fibers, stainless steel fibers and such are also used. The composite material used to make Aerospoke wheels is in fact a combination of carbon fibers and resin.
