Do you think the mechanics pointed and laughed at him when he brought this into the shop to get built up?

Wow.. tight geo 'eh? I like it when there is a photo of the rider in the ad! Sexy!

    Hahaha funny stuff.
They may not have laughed at him to his face. But i'm almost positive he was made fun of by someone in the shop as soon as he had left.

    Schwinn Varsity.

    $650.

    A - hem.

As for whether the shop guys laughed at him, it depends on the shop. There are several establishments in the central Bay Area (San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley) that cater heavily to fixter-hipsters, primarily because the establishments are owned and staffed by fixter-hipsters. Why would they mock a fellow aesthete? Good luck finding one in Concord, though.

POWDER COATING (satin black) NOT A SPRAY PAINT JOB, A PROFESSIONAL BEAUTIFUL PAINT JOB $200
Note, Fixter-dude: Powder coating is not paint, no matter what you paid for it or how aggressively you capitalize.

Frankly, my biggest disappointment was that the bars and rims were actually green, and not the Velocity and Cinelli reflective stuff, which are spooky-cool.

    the cinelli bartape is awsome

Eaglerock, I think if anything that would get him laughed at more. Those hipsters are picky and fashion oriented. A schwinn varsity is about as far as you can get from an njs bike with an arospok.

Eaglerock seems like an alright guy to me so Im going to go out on a limb and say its you, lucas a, who is a jackass. It must be one of you I suppose. Also, why did you steal my velospace name format?

The Tarck Bike forums are that way -------------------->

Don't turn this place into Tarck you guys. It's funny but it's also exhausting.
There's a fine line between pokin fun at shit every so often and just being mean.
A forum that ain't so goddamn bully-ish is what I like about this site. Please try not to fuck that up :(

my question is what's wrong with building up a schwinn or any other common [insert bike name here]?

is it mainly the fact that he is trying to scalp it to death? or is it the fact that it is a common undesirable frame only? or is it because it looks the way it does?

disclosure: i have a schwinn that i rescued and put some effort into, so yeah, you guys go ahead and lol at me too, i suppose :)

    it's that he's passing off a $300 (maybe) conversion as a $650 track bike.

i wonder if he knew that for the money he paid for the powdercoat job, he could have gotten a black kilo frame?

word. My first build (which I've yet to post up) is a '78 Schwinn Varsity. I like the way it rides alright but if I sell it later (as opposed to just taking the parts I bought and scrapping the frame) I wouldn't expect anymore than $200 for it, and I might just break even with final investment price. Nothing wrong with Schwinns IMO, but they're not worth $650.

Personally, I’ll be glad when this hipster/fixie just thing runs its course and dies.
Bikes as fashion have always been a bad idea as it just makes the rest of us look bad. I equate them to roller skaters in the bike lane...

I looked at the NJS rules for a minute once, but only the front page (Worthly famous sports, originated from Japan) is available in English. Are aerospokes (in the generic sense) even permitted? I was under the understanding that 36-spoke standard wheels (with the high-dollar value NJS stamp!) were the only ones that passed muster.

The Velocity rim and the Cinelli tape actually look pretty innocuous when there's no light on them - kind of flat white. As I'm sure you can confirm, wes, black+white passes the fashion sniff test around these parts.

And this is why I say there are worse things than the Urban Outfitter bikes.

No, no aerospokes in NJS. The color of that bike, although a little painful to my eyes, would not be enough to draw a comment from me. Its that the guy is trying to sell a varsity for $650.

I know the undeserved sense of self accomplishment comes with the whole track world thing. But some of you deserve to be hated on as well.

If they are riding a bike, who the f?!? cares what it is or what they do with it. I dont really take the time to put energy into thinking of ways in which to hinder others from riding.

But you care about him selling it? (As much as he is either trying to scam someone or being an idiot)
  6.
It never ceases to amaze me the amounts of money people will put out to get a frame painted or powder coated. Who decided that ANY frame was worth $200 in coloring?? I'd much rather have a frame that's $200 nicer than $200 prettier, there's nothing wrong with some spray paint, or better yet a $4 can of brush on rustoleum. We used to have an old schwinn, it was green and we sold it at a yard sale for $25. I've only ever had one frame that cost me more than $200, and that was the new Six13 frame I paid $250 for, and that wasn't even painted!

that ad is very upsetting to me , i feel like when i ride my bike with more than 1 of my friends im being stared down by the art school kids or am the subject of someones conversation about "kids" on track bikes now, its so annoying but at the same time we can all be glad that those of us who arnt apart of this crowd or new trend, focus more on the quality of the ride than the flashy look at me deep v riding guys ,my bike looks like shit but to me its way fresher than any white aerospoke or black sugino messenger crank on a scratch free pake frame.

scratches look sexy to me, i like my bikes like my women well beat up but still and sexy with out the make up(i dont hit girls) (and i had apake but it was only 50 bucks so bite me that shit has been well ran in to the ground like it should be and had no paint just rust like a water world bike)

    Correct.
  7.
I amend my post up there a little. It was early in the morning, I was feelin real posi about bikes, was about to get on mine and ride like 15 easy miles alongside a really pretty creek through downtown denver with nothin but crisp morning air to stimulate my senses.

I've been at work all day now though and had to deal with every kinda fuckin retarded mutant sun of a bitch life could possibly throw at me then I had to ride through downtown to get home because I thought it was a good time to stop by the bike shop and pick up them Nitto RB-021s I've been eyeing for a couple weeks (which are sweet as hell by the way) so after almost getting run over not only by dumb ass motorists but even dumber ass kids on bikes who don't have a fucking clue in the world how to navigate a couple of city blocks without flipping out and damn near killing someone I'll simply shorten my above post to the more concise and timely, fuck that bike.

Hate on brother wes. Hate on :)
