So it seems like when I'm riding at a steady pace my bike is fine... all of a sudden I go to shoot across a street or climb a hill and I get down low and I hear a loud ass noise that sounds like something snapped ie. metal to metal. But it looks like nothing has changed, and im fine to ride on, but if I go to dig down and climb, or just haul ass it does the same thing... I'm scared that it will snap something. Some more info - My freewheel cog is kind of jerry rigged with some spacers and shit so that it will fit. Im running 45-16 and recently bought a sinz chain ring when i went from 10 spd to single, bought a heavy duty asshole of a chain, and had it put together at the lbs... anyone know what might be making this noise?

You can find a very well written, detailed article about bicycle chain lines here

In a nut shell, the chain line is the straightness of the chain between the rear cog and the chain ring. For instance, with a poor chain line the side plates of the chain links will pull tightly against the teeth on your cogs and/or chain ring, and could create a all kinds of unwanted noises as a result.

Another possibility is chain tension. If your chain is too tight, the chain could be binding in spots, especially when under pressure. This is a pretty common source of popping sounds like you described, especially when really cranking down.

Fuck me ok yeah i think it must be that the rear freewheel cog doesnt line up with the chainring.... Thanks for the feedback I think I know what I need to do

The ability to tweak your derailleur position by tiny increments, in order to make the system shut the hell up, is one of the key benefits of friction shifting :-0

Yeah and i converted to single cuz i know that on geared bikes it is almost always the derailleur thats why i asked
