i have a easton ec90 fork with a 1''theadless carbon tube. Would it be safe to use a shim so i can fit a 1 1/8''stem, or would i need to titen the stem so much that the fork tube might crack. If it helps i will use a aluminum stem.
thanks -

Well, a 1 1/8'' stem wont fit a 1" steerer tube. So its the shim, or nothing.
As far as cracking the carbon fiber, a stem should be tightened enough to loose all play in the stem and head tube. If you crack your fork trying to tighten your stem then you shouldn't be touching any bikes, or tools for that matter. -

i have never cracked any of my carbon fiber parts, but i have never used a shim before so i didnt know how much more i should tighten my stem.and if it required a lot more pressure to be safe i didnt know if i would incrase my chances of cracking my fork a lot. -

If you are unsure, your lbs can install it. However, in my experience (only used a shim once for a stem) you tighten it as you would a regular stem and fork. -
