so i recently just bought a somewhat exspensive white leather saddle and since its been raining here in ny for aobut 3 weeks straight i figured i should waterproof her. only thing is everywhere i read is that light colors will probably turn darker so im hesitant to try this out. can anyone fill me in if the discoloration is substantial or what they suggest. -

I've not used a white saddle, but if you use a colorless weatherproofing solution you should be fine. You don't necessarily have to use a treatment specifically for bicycle saddles, you can use any quality leather treatment. For long time exposure to rain, you need to find a vinyl fitted saddle cover (besides using the leather treatment). Vittoria and Concors made them, and I'm sure they still do. -

Every product that I've used on leather, include leather shoes, leather toe straps, leather seats, etc...have all discolored and darken the leather. If it's real 100% leather, un-laminated, expect it to turn gray anyway from just normal use. -

I haven't seen Vittoria or Concor rainbaggies. I had a Brooks, which got stolen off my POS Marin Bobcat Trail in a storm last winter :-(
I have two Selle Italias: One oldie rubberized one, and a newer vinylish one that one of my LBSes sells for about $7. And there's always the plastic bag + rubber band option, for the street person look.
I am a treater of leather saddles, since all my riders are leather. Saddle soap, polish as appropriate, shine, weatherproof. I use a sort of drippy oil paste that's intended for waterproofing soccer cleats. I don't remember the brand offhand; I'll look for the tub tomorrow and post back. -

But the shower cap wrinkles chafe my butt. Shower caps cost more than plastic grocery bag+rubber band; all the street-person look, at much greater expense.
The name of the goopy leather treatment is Chelsea Leather Food (Caswell & Co., Kettering England). It's widely recommended for treating soccer cleats; think of it as the old soccer fogey equivalent of Proofide.
There are water treatments that you usually find at camping goods stores, like the old reliable beeswax-based Sno Seal. Dirt cheap; works great.
