Whats with that
I personally dont get it
why people hang their chains from their seat
to their seatstay on the rear triangle -

So people don't jack their saddles. If the theif had a chain breaker it wouldn't take too long I suppose, but perhaps it would draw attention. -

It's a real dick in the spokes coming outside to find your saddle has been stolen by some douche-bag. -

For some reason I only ever see it done on seats that no one in their right mind would steal, so I've never been sure. Some pocket sized bolt cutters could also cut them off in one snip as well without really looking suspicious at all.
I think at this point it's just kind of a fashion thing. -

Yeah the idea makes sense. Lock down the old saddle to make it harder for douchebags to steal em. A determined thief is gettin that san marco whether you like it or not though.
The rest of us just ride old beat to shit concors your average thief walks right past. Seems to me track bikes tend to get stolen by assholes at alleycats more than bike thieves. They go for the full carbon joint locked up by the quick release front wheel outside of Starbucks more often than not. -

Sad but true. Most fixed gears and their parts are stolen by people that ride fixed.
Roadies seem to not be to savvy about locking up. I'd also bet that the average roadie is a little bit less likely to be a grimy lunatic who will attack you for messing with their bike when compared to the average fixed rider. Plus, the roadie probably has clipless shoes on. If I was a professional bike thief I'd target roadies at the farmers market, cafe, etc.
I used to have a chain around my brooks when I had to lock up outside at college. The goal is to not be the easiest target. When I have a chain on my saddle and the guy next to me doesnt I'm not the target. -

I have one locking my San Marco Regal to my daily ride that I lock up. Just that added, "...go steal the guy next to me's saddle instead...", insurance to me. If they really want my seat though, I know it's not going to deter them that much! Just one more hoop for the asshole to jump through to get it though.

Bolt a razor sharp piece if metal under the saddle, then when the thief grabs it he'll see his finger tips twitching on the ground he'll freak out and never try it again. "Hmmm should I run with the saddle or pick up my severed finger tips and head to the ICU??"
I wish I had a Tazer that could be activated when a bike is parked. I hate bike thieves. -

i just have to say that i agree with the comment that track bike stuff gets stolen way more when there is an ally cat and a lot of out of town riders are hanging around. i usually am a dick to riders i dont know for that reason, because i know quite a few jack shit from others in the community. i feel like i have to carry around 3 locks whenever i park my bike even if its around other riders. they are the only ones that know how much the shit is worth, not some sketchy drug addicted bike thief. -

Yeah after seeing this video, I'm willing to say I'd rather take the chance of stealing a $3k carbon Cervelo rather than the locked up cheap mountain bike that someone didn't even lock up on their porch. Even if you don't get the front wheel you could still run faster than a roadie in clipless shoes. If they're smart they'd take the shoes off to chase you, but then you just have to run for some gravel. They also refuse to run because they're not moving fast enough for their spandex to have any aerodynamic properties.

I saw that 1st video on "Spike TV" late at night. UFC they're not
Also, I have to say, although not as bad as having your seat stolen, its an equally dick move for somebody to steal your removable rear fender on a rainy day. That's why I paid $20 so I can park my bike inside the building I work in. -

Something doesn't have to look good to be a fashion thing. Remember Boss and Jnco jeans? remember all those thugs that STILL walk around my neighborhood wearing white undershirts and wife beaters 10 sizes to big, and pants big enough for fat albert? Giant wings on Honda Civics, plastic surgery, guys wearing their girlfriends jeans and their long black emo hair combed in front of one eye? that guy that thought it was a good idea to get a neck tattoo? remember cinelli vigorelli's with bmx stems, 650c aerospokes?
I'd say this would not be fashion if it was mostly used on nice seats, but 9 our of 10 times it's done to a chewed up Kent bicycle seat on a yellow and red Fuji Track, and if they did it with something that wasn't the easiest chain in history to break through. One of these things is possibly the best deterrent there is for your seat, and would take someone way longer get past.... http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Bicycle-Security-24-Inches/dp/B000RY61F2
What sucker bike thief doesn't have a cheap chain breaker on the multi tool they just stole from Kmart?
I think 75% of fashion looks just plain awful, the other 25% of acceptable fashion revolves around hot chicks, old cannondale bicycles, and streetfightered sportbikes. -

Good luck getting my concor off without me seeing you through the window of the store or coincidentally walking out while you're doing it.
Good luck running away from me (I'm pretty fast).
Good luck with our fight in the parking lot. I promise I want some of your fuckin teeth as a trophy, what kinda scraps you got in you mr. crackhead?

That's a very nice poem.
and Cloud, yeah, 24" seems pretty long. I've installed a few on other peoples bikes, I don't remember exactly how they went together, I think, you stick it through one of the triangles on the frame, then stick it through each other, wrap it around the post a couple times, and then I think it actually gets wrapped through one of the parts that clamp your seat onto the post. Can't picture it in my head anymore, but you have to completely undo the whole setup before you can undo it. As far as it being long, I think the same crowd that usually bought them, weren't always the same crowd who were concerned with having the right size bike or having some extra cord wrapped around it, so having it a little long so it fit anything worked, but the ones we carried at the last shop I was at weren't nearly that long. -

thats why my bike goes nowhere but under my ass... and i wear mtb shoes even on a mtb, i can run pretty freaking fast because i dont do much other than ride my bike work school sleep and eat.
& i may ride a nice bike in some fruity spandex with some velcro-ed on shoes, all matching, but ill still go ape on somebody.... you should see me whenever anybody moves it at my house..... let alone somebody interested in taking it.... that and i ride eggbeaters, which are decently hard to ride without the shoes... and again if somebody theoretically did try and steal my ti seatpost and seat id go apeshit.... but thats why i would 1 never leave it locked up, and 2 even if i did, ether bolt it on (easy to steal) or use a quick release, open said quick release, remove seat / seatpost, then you 1 have your seat and seatpost.. and nobody could steal it unless they straight up mugged you or you leave it sitting.... and then also 2 you have a big old pipe that you could theoretically beat somebody stealing your seatpost-less and seat lacking bike from you. Logic :)
Seems like a total fashion thing... alot of fixie things are... unless your a legit courier... like 1 aero wheel in front... -
