I'm converting an old raleigh for my g.f and really have no idea what would be a good gear for her. I was thinking 46x17. Would that be too big? She's not really a cyclist(yet). Any girls reading this, or any guys with g.fs that ride fixed, can you help me out? -

i say 44/17. I'm a guy, and i ride 46/17, and 44 seems like it'd be good to start on. -

If you're going to be riding together then I suggest a slightly smaller ratio because at 44/17 she'll be spinning and not keeping up.
From my experience girls generally pedal slower, despite what gear they may have.
At least it's something that can easily be adjusted. -

I enjoyed it.
Both of my wife's bikes have 47-17, I think. If I was going again, I'd consider smaller, but she hasn't complained. -

sexist thread. ha. Seriously though, I dont see why a girl would need a smaller gear than a guy. They are typically not as strong as a guy but they are also smaller. Its all about weight to strength ratios. Put her on whatever gear you would put a guy beginner on. Maybe I am totally misguided though.
p.s. Did you post this to convince us that you have a girlfriend? ha -

Hahaha. I mostly agree. I think weight and strength are a factor but I think it really comes down to personality/aggressiveness.
Not to brag, but my gf's running 32/16 and keeping up with me (I don't know how) but I find it outrageously attractive.
PS her new bike will have a much more practical gear ratio. -

Yeah it really depends on her leg strength and weight. Now mind you a road bike conversion is gonna be a bit heavier than a track bike and a little more slack geometry so if you get her ass riding at 48/16 it's gonna hurt.
If she's got them horse legs a 46 or 47/17 should do. If she's got trouble climbing stairs you wanna bring that chainring down to a 44 or 42 even.
You can always change it if she starts bitchin about how many races she loses on the shitty bike you made for her :) -

yes. because I feel the need to convince a total stranger that I have a girlfriend. I'm not lickedwicked.
And maybe you should join a feminist based social networking site if you think this thread is sexist. It's a fact that the average girl isn't as strong as the average guy. and i would think the difference in strength is normally bigger than the difference in weight. therefore, they most likely won't be as strong lb for lb.
And I'm sure my make believe girlfriend could ride the same gears as me but I don't think she would enjoy riding as much. 48x17 isn't the biggest gear ever but it still makes for a pretty tough ride uphill.
so do you actually have any experience with girls that ride fixed? -

oh you're asking for a flame war. I think I'm better than you, that's why I'll refrain from insults. By insulting me you show me how I have offended you. That means I have offended you unintentionally. I guess that's how good my insults are. Keep insulting me please. I love to hear what you have to say. If you don't feel guilty for insulting me keep doing it because I know I haven't purpose attacked your character if I have insulted you. On another note if this was meant to be an insult that means I too either have a girlfriend with the same problem or that I'm a girl that rides fixed. I don't find either to be an insult. I guessing you're a heterosexual male and from what I know they like women. If I were a women that would mean you have the possiblity of liking me. So your intended insult has been deconstructed without insulting you. -

sorry but gear ratios are not gender specific. to tell you the truth i probably ride one of these "girl" gear ratios at 42/15 because my street ride is a shitty conversion, although I'm constantly spinning the shit out my cranks at 73 gear inches. when I do ride with girls they kick my ass on flat ground, up hill is another story. I'd much prefer about 78 gear inches, 48/16 if you want her to keep up without bouncing out of her seat. but yeah you can't really ask that question without providing more deets about your gf man. -

i'm a girl, i'm 5'6" 110lbs and I ride a 48/16 on my fixed gear and a 52/17 on my single speed conversion - I don't really find the 48/16 too difficult, if it were a 48/18 the hills would be so much easier so I'd consider that if the 44 is way too easy (I started out on the 48/16 and I lived through it) -

Yeah, I think it has a lot to do with how good you are at what you do and the composition of your muscles. I mean, I carry around the equivalent of an 8 year old with me, compared to you (I weigh 175) and only some of that is muscle. Less than I wish, really. Your bike probably weighs a couple pounds less, too.
