i think there can be a problem. celebrities that get noticed for fixed will also get noticed for being "noob". That's not bad, but what can be is the embarassment if they fall. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall". So they risk embarassment, but if they were to privately ride without the watchful eye of the media, after they master something they can then show it to the world without others passing judgment.

Um dude there really isn't a "Celebrities Rush Out to Buy Newest Accessory, Tarck Bikes!" craze going on right now. These retards are never going to give up their beach cruisers and SUVs.
Funny bit though. During the DNC here in Denver there was this tiny bike ride hosted by Mathew Modine (dude from Weeds and Full Metal Jacket) that I went on. He was actually a really cool dude and knew a lot about cycling. We talked about Midnight Riddaz in LA and how fuckin silly Critical Mass has become. Guy seemed to actually understand the value of leavin them car keys on the hook in the kitchen and taking your bike out for the day.
As cool as the dude was I don't expect to see his ass in the next MASH video though.

Some people were cyclists before they became famous. I'm not saying that cycling by celebrities are bad, but maybe they shouldn't get noticed for riding fixed. Why is fixed such a big deal? I don't want celebrities to bring fixed to the spotlight because people will associate a specific person for making fixed famous. What I want to see is a celebrity that normally doesn't cycle support cycling. Then he can ride fixed if s/he desires because people will only bike more often because a celebrity thinks biking is fashionable rather than it also being useful and environmentally friendly first.

wait, how does one become good at riding a track bike? if you're not racing, then what is there really to be "good" at? doing trackstands, breaking traffic laws, doing a wheelie? i mean sure, he's no Gemini the Wheelie King (props to anyone that knows where this came from), but i'm sure he can slow himself down and ride his bike.

EDIT: and what does skating have to do with riding a bike? so, he can't skate. shit, i can't skate for my life. but i sure as hell can ride a bmx bike.

effort. I'm thinking that he has to first put his mind into one thing and if he knows he can't do any better at his best efforts, I would agree he should stop. If he cannot ride even after he has tried to the best of his ability, he should stop. But I don't know how or if he decided to stop skating or not, but if he starts fixed and hasn't tried his hardest before he stops, he'll have bought a decked out fixed with front and back aerospokes. He's a celebrity and he can spend the money, but any normal person would not buy the expensive top of the line equiptment before he has even started. Take this analogy, I want to start trying to do puzzles so I buy this 1000 piece jig saw puzzle when I have had no prior experience. The dude buys the best and if he just gives up it will seem pretentious.
  17.
it's good to upgrade, but when he's bought expensive parts on his bike and it turns out he likes to ride fixed and he figures out what he thinks is cool or is comfortable and it's not on his bike, he'll have to recustomize anyways and in some cases he may even have to down grade if he finds that a certain part he likes may be less expensive. this way. He hasn't taken the time to find out what he likes before he blows his money, he has his money to blow but eventually when he does want to customize I'll laugh because he'll have spent large sums of money and he won't be able to sell second hand bike parts that he'll have when he swaps out parts from his bike for more preferable ones.
  18.
the fact that he's running an aerospoke, made to race and be aerodynamic, on the gangsta frame, made for tricks, shows how much of a poser he is. No one would buy a gangsta frame for racing, and anyone who know anything about tricks shouldnt really be using an aerospoke, because their heavier than your standard wheel. The two parts he bought are trendy and functional, when used in their own divisions, but the way he puts them together just shows he really doesn't know shit and is following the trend.

so I buy this 1000 piece jig saw puzzle when I have had no prior experience. The dude buys the best and if he just gives up it will seem pretentious.

so 1000 pieces is the top of the line in puzzles? upgraded from last years 9000 piece model. I heard campy just came out with an 1100 piece puzzle. Can anyone verify that?

Pretentious? He's rich, if I was that rich I'd have a bike with aero spokes. I doubt I'd even ride it once, but with that much money, I'd just buy things to check them out, as it would honestly be easier to charge things and have them delivered rather than going to the store just to look at it.

Either way, I bought 2 new hammers the other day that are way above my hammering skills. They both have this magnetic nail starter on the top, and the big one is half graphite. Does that make me pretentious? I just wanted a nice hammer and had the cash in my pocket. I wonder if there's a carpenters forum somewhere that's getting all pissed that I own some hammers I don't need, when I should really be hitting stuff with the $4 wooden one I had.

I don't even like the guy, at all, but I guaruntee if I had Pharell money, I'd have a couple $150k sportbikes parked in my garage and forget aerospokes even exist, so I think he's showing himself to be pretty down-to-earth with the fact that he even spent money on a bicycle in the first place.

Actually yes. When I worked construction the carpenters used to make fun of homeowners they saw buying expensive tools at home depot. If the quality of the product is greater than your ability to use the product, you will be made fun of by someone. Its a law of nature. Kanye and Pharrell have been polluting my radio for a while now, the least they can do is be the object of my ridicule via the internet. I dont care if they are rich. I'm an equal opportunity hater.

Honestly, if I had the money, I'd ride a Pinarello Prince or Cinelli Best Of with Bora Ultras and Super Record. Way above my skill level, but sweet ass bikes anyhow. These people are rich, they have toys, it's whatever, and we can all go about our lives once again.

yeah, he can spend so much at once cause he's rich but I don't think any normal person would invest so much into something s/he might not even know if s/he would enjoy. maybe as people get rich, they get careless with what they spend.

no insults of specific parts of his bicycle were made. The idea of spending copious amounts of money is disliked.
I think I disagree with a style because it's stupid. Why would you have a nice track frame and make it single speed? You love to coast? Go get a beach cruiser, heavy and simple. Add more weight so you can build up momentum to coast, don't get a light frame because you won't be able to coast as long.
The law is unclear. Hands free is also the use of speaker phone, blue tooth, or some other headset device.

Kanye doesn't have aerospokes. It's not good to start riding fixed with aerospokes. They're heavier than traditional spokes and thus adding to the difficulty in stopping because of greater mass contributing to greater momentum

    r. Rabbi says,
ooops i just seen that on the website. says its a carbon composite

Composite materials are materials that use one material for compressions or tension strength and a matrix to hold them in place.

Fiberglass and epoxy are a composite. Concrete (sand and cement) are a composite. Adobe (straw and clay) is a composite. Carbon fiber (usually with epoxy, sometimes with other plastics) is a composite. Plastic by itself isn't.

There are a lot of ways to make hard objects out of carbon fiber composite. Different weaves, straight tow, or short chopped fibers are used depending on the requirements of the final thing. They are all filled with a plastic of some sort.

I'd like to see a carbon fiber/cement composite sometime. I bet it would have interesting properties.
  35.
haha this whole thread has brightened up my night.
Who cares if they are riding nice bikes?
If I had several grand laying around, I would sure as hell build up a a really nice track specific bike or high end road machine that severly exceeded my needs.
If I had an income like that of these two guys, I would have several of these bikes and I would be a piss poor representative of some high end road bike, I'm sure!

It is all relative. While an iro or a pake may be an affordable set up for someone working part time or on minimum wage while trying to sustain one's self, I would assume picking up a vigorelli is like spending almost nothing for Kanye.

Plus, why does riding fixed have to be exclusive to the social elite of velospace?
If these guys want to go out and ride every once in a while, for goodness' sake, let them ride whatever they please.

I'll tell you why the BMX/Fixed crossover is occurring. the guys who run the BMX companies are too embarrassed that they can't ride a BMX anymore, mostly cuz their back hurts from being bent forward on a BMX but they don't want to ride a 24 or a cruiser and admit they've "given up". So companies like FBM (Fat Bald Men) decided to make a BMX-y fixed frame. The other thing us old bastards can't do is ride much more than a mile on a BMX before everything starts hurting, feet, lungs (from the years of smoking weed), neck, back, my neck and my back.

On flat ground a fixed with 120 psi in tires with a 5mm contact patch practically pedals itself in comparison to a fat-tired BMX (with a fat tired old man on it). Pretty much they are using the fixed gear bike as a beach cruiser, a beach cruiser that can be pedaled at 15 mph with very little effort.

As far as these celebrities go, it just brings them 6 degrees closer to Kevin Bacon.
