when I see an unlocked bike that's not mine, should I deflate either or both tires to deter thieves? I'm sure thieves wouldn't bring around a pump to steal bikes. I'm sure the thieves would abandon the bike since they won't be able to ride it away and if they walk the bike, they may get seen and caught by the owner. I'm sure the thieves would abandon stealing that bike since it is an inconvenience and i'm sure this slight inconvenience won't discourage the owner to abandon their bike. Should I help? -

leave it alone. if the owner didn't care about it enough to lock it up/bring it inside, then "too bad/so sad" -

Have you ever thought of doing that “favor” for unlocked cars as well?
If I came back to my bike and found some one doing that to my unlocked bike I don’t think I would be to appreciative to there efforts, even if they did get a chance to explain themselves.

If I run into the store and come outside to find flat tires on my beater I'd be pissed. Its a person right to leave their bike unlocked. Its not your right to let the air out of their tires.
Heres a simple rule to follow: Never touch another persons bike without first having been invited to do so. -

i'm sure that letting the air out of the tires from a bike cannot be evidence for thievery. It is an effort to stop thieves. I carry around a pump so I won't mind, but I'm sure anybody who has had their bike stolen would rather simply have their tires deflated instead of having their whole bike missing. -

you need keys to even start the car. Cars are fine alone. They take experts to steal if no key is available.

are you gonna wait till the person comes back to his/her bike and pump up their tires for them? if they're a messenger you may as well give them $20 for their time you've just wasted.Posted By: lickedwicked

LOL. People choose to not lock their bikes. Do you think youre the saftey police or something? You get to decide that unlocked bikes get flattened tires? Mind your own biz. If they wanted to use flattened tires as a safety measure theyd do it themselves. -

you think I deflate tires for the reason of safety? Read again, but if you didn't know bicycles are the hardest thing to reobtain after being stolen. Today I watch justice being dispensed and I was in awe the whole time when this kid found his specialized bike back with all the scratches he made on it a year ago. He even had the scars to prove it. In Davis there are many bikes and there are many bike thefts. Safety is the wrong thing you found from my post, it's more like financial security -

or maybe I should tell them how easily I could have jacked their ride and they'd lose more than $20 for the few seconds they saved from not locking their bike. -

Yeah I totally didnt mean safety as in keeping bikes safe from thieves. That just wouldnt make nearly as much sense. -

You should remove the back brake, only a jerk would steal a bike without a back brake!
If I was stealing a bike I wouldn't care if there were air in the tires. I'd just ride home on flat tires, and if I destroyed the wheels in the mean time, I'd still have a whole bike left. -

The whole idea you propose here seems kinda silly to me and I'm not 100% sure this is something you really thought out much.
But it's cool, you asked, people answered. Probably not how you wanted them to but they did.
I'll be honest with you if I tossed my bike down in the grass real quick while I ran in the co-op to grab a drink and I looked outside and saw some kid letting the air out of my tires he'd be swallowing his pearly beiges. That's no lie. You really don't touch other people's shit unless they tell you it's ok to do. Especially someone's bike.
I've left my bike unlocked outside of a store every so often because I'm really just running inside for two seconds and I can see it out the window. On the off chance an opportunistic crackhead sees my unlocked bike and tries to take off on it I won't even have to chase the dude down. He'll get about three or four rotations in and most certainly eat shit when his body realizes he's riding a track bike for the first time.
If you're really concerned about that kinda stuff the right thing to do is just poke your head into whatever establishment the bike is in front of and say "hey fools one of you left a bike out here just beggin to get stolen! hit that up before some juggalo sees it". You're in the right and you might have done someone a favor.
Heh, you kids sometimes. "so if I see someone riding a road bike conversion without a brake should I put silly putty in the brake holes so they know they need to get a track bike?" -

I was very interested in the fact that he pulled out the 9th grade word of the day, and yet clearly pays so little attention in his english/grammar class. Your teacher would fire you if she saw the comments you left on here and how poorly constructed they are.
If you see a bike outside not locked up, why don't you just take it? that way no one can steal it. Better yet, stay with the bike until the owner comes back, and then charge him for your guardian services, and don't let him have his bike back until he pays. -

Carry around a spanner and crank puller and remove the bikes crankset. That way, crackheads will be too confused to steal it. The owner will be sure to thank you.
