i'm looking into getting a new crankset to replace my current garbage one, and i've narrowed it down to either the omnium or pista advanced. i was just hoping to get some reviews, opinions, and or pros & cons about either of them from all of you. thanks -

I just replaced my Sugino 75's for the Omniums, and totally love them. They are pretty much the lightest cranks on the market, and are also the stiffest. Also, they are SUPER easy to install yourself with no hassle. -

You can also get them as a full set, crank, BB and ring for 150 on Ebay with free shipping! GREAT deal! -

The omniums are the ugliest cranks ever produced, known to man. I don't know about the quality.
Miche's are good for the price, supposedly comparable to 75's but cheaper. -

Some of us care more about riding good quality parts, rather then just saying if it's good or bad judging by how ugly or cool it looks. Saying it's ugly does not mean it's bad. And also, after looking at the bike you ride, and reading your other comments such as "Pista Concepts are fucking stupid" and how H+Sons rims look silly, it's hard to give much validation to your recommendations.
However...I do have to agree, that with certain frames like old NJS lugged frames, the Omnium cranks would look ugly. They are best suited on a newer contemporary looking frames. -

I had the omniums for a little while, I had no complaints . They are super beefy, but I ended up getting rid of them cause of the look.. I now ride gold grand mightys . -

yeah they don't look as clean/good as the miche's. but i mean it sounds like performance wise they do really well so in this case it's function over fashion i guess -

i love my omniums, they ride great and i dont think they look bad at all. i've heard alot of people complain about the miche bottom bracket though and the spindle length is kinda weird so its hard to upgrade. -

Prolly said on his blog "My only concerns here are the outboard bottom-bracket's bearings getting pitted quickly, but we'll see." Is this true? -

the omnium bearings are a shit ton beefier than any campy, sugino, or miche crank. -

im personally a fan of the omniums. supposedly as stiff as dura-ace and lighter. the only downside i have seen/read about is when using them on the street, the non drive side bearings get a fair amount of stress put on them and are prone to cracking.
im currently running the miche primato advanced cranks. i have no complaints about the cranks what so ever. my only negative comment about them is the bottom brackets available for them. theres 3 that i know of. miche (which is a pos), campagnolo record($$$), and phil (also $$$). there may also be a couple other campy bb that works. -

I have the Miche Primato crank (not the Advanced) and i love the hell out of them. They are light (630g), stiff and very durable. I use mine on the street everyday and I don't baby them or anything on my bike and they are still like new.
The Miche Primato Advanced is cheaper in price and more versatile with BB choice
thats just my 2 cents -

OH and any ISO taper (italian made) works with the Miche. You can use a JIS but you have to make sure you over size the spindal because the taper is different. A bike shop can help you with that.
the Miche BB is low in price and amazing for $25-$30. Or the Campy Veloce $45
You have to use the GXP BB with the truvativ crank (correct me if i'm wrong) -

the downside to the campy veloce bottom bracket is that it has lips on both drive side and non drive side cups.
so when you space the spindle to set the correct chainline, the spindle doesnt seat properly in the cups.
the iso taper on the miche is something that always gets overlooked, and with constant removing/installing of the cranks on mismatched iso/jis tapers will cause them to prematurely fail.
imo if your going to spend all that money in a nice crankset you should have a correctly set chainline. -

Thats why you can just get the Miche BB. I've never had any problem with it and you can adjust both cups which makes it great for chainline help.
Miche with Miche.
No worrying about GXP bb then buy the cups and you can only use that BB with that crankset.
I like the Truvativ and I like the Miche...I like the Miche better...mostly because i have it and I have zero complaints. -

miche will get the job done. but there are 2 downsides to it. the bb cups dont stay tight (easily fixed with BLUE loctite) and the the bearings crap out fairly fast compared to other comparable bottom brackets.
but im right there with you brooklynbombs, im a fan of both. -

Hold up a second. Why in the hell did you replace Sugino 75s with Truvativs? I ain't hatin on the Omniums but damn dude 75s are like the cat's ass! Maybe there was something wrong with them. I dunno. I'm just hoping you didn't scrap the 75s for fun.
About the subject at hand. I like the Miche set more myself but both a quality. Just pick what you like out of those two and you won't go wrong. -

Yeah, I know. Well...here is the thing... I got the Sugino 75's to replace their cheaper messenger cranks, and I could notice a HUGE increase in stiffness and power with the 75's. They are one of the best cranks, hands down. However, after riding a friends bike with the Omnium and seeing how they feel, I decided to give them a try to replace the 75's. I understand that it's more of a downgrade, at least in cost, to go from 75's to the Omnium...but after now riding the Omnium's for a few weeks I honestly feel they are just as stiff, smooth and fast as my 75's and I felt comfortable with selling off my 75's and Phil Wood BB.
As I see it, altho the cranks are not worth as much, they are just as stiff, strong, smooth and reliable, but have two advantages over the 75's.
-FIRST, they are a few hundred grams lighter, both in the arms and the spindle. Granted, I WAS riding a Phil Wood BB that was heavy as hell.
-SECOND, I made nearly 100 bucks by buying the Omniums and selling my 75's and BB. -
