I picked up some aerospokes, front and rear, CHEAP. The problem is, there is not enough room on the rear for a lock ring. There is; however, a large (almost mini donut size) silver item between the center of the hub and the cog (pardon the lack of technical jargon). Can I remove that and then replace the cog and add a lock ring? Does anyone know if that silver item is essential?

    Thanks

sounds like a spacer, perhaps? can you post a picture? what was on the hub to begin with?

Or is it a freewheel? Can you spin the "large silver item" without spinning the wheel?

I finally got a hold of the guy who sold me the wheels. These things are ancient (in bike years). It is a spacer/locking device for the track. I spoke to a guy at an auto parts store about my need to lock the cog. He suggested JB Weld. I am donig some experimenting now.

    Thanks for the replies.

Jesus dude that sounds like more trouble than it's worth. You may wanna put that Aerospoke back up on eBay and get you a normal rear wheel for your bike. Once you get away from a standard cog / lockring setup you're just asking for problems down the road.

Yeah, just sell them and get a normal set of wheels.
