I'm buying a new cog and I have it narrowed down to either a Dura Ace or a Surly. Does anyone have an opinion on which one is better quality? Any personal success or failure stories with either?

Unless you're competing on a track, it doesn't matter. I got a $15 Soma cog thats lasted 2 years so far, no visible wear. Spend the money on something else.

I like my EAI, Ive also have a DA. The DA is super nice, but I still think the EAI is better, no signs of wear after about 2000 miles plus its pretty : )

    surly cogs are just fine.
  1.
I really like my surly cog. I have a lot of miles on it and it still is in great shape.
  2.
I've got a Surly right now, had a Dura-Ace for a while. Honestly it makes no difference. Both are quality. Go with the less expensive.
  3.
I'm not a fan of skinny cogs and rings.
  4.
I've got EAI, they are cool.. But as long as you keep your chain clean/lubricated that the most important. get the less $$

The only thing I don't like about Dura Ace is that they don't come any bigger than 16t. If you're cool with that, then yeah, whatever.

I have a 17 tooth dura ace cog on my beater bike right now.

BTW; if you're at the track, you're going to do just fine with DA cogs. How much mileage does a track (read: sees the track only) per session (barring 24 hour madison or 2 day events)? Maybe 2 maybe 3 miles? 10 tops?

With cogs and chain rings, it's better to just have MORE of them to swap around and experiment with versus having only one.

i did ~42 miles on the track last time i was at ADT. that included warm up, intermission, a 10km points, a 7.5km scratch, and a 5km tempo.
