i've got myself a new ride (to me) with the oem alloy wienmann concave rims. and these things are crusty with brake rubber. it looks like someone was jamming both brakes on a down hill ride for miles. this stuff will just not come off! i'd like to keep the bike as close to stock as possible.

anyone know of any tricks for removing particularly stubborn brake crud from alloy rims?
    werd.

Rubbing alcohol isn't as effective as acetone, but it's a less-scary chemical, and you may already have a bottle around the house. Try that first.

bleach white tire cleaner? like for white walled tires? i'll check that out.
  2.
I take burnt rubber off the quarter panels of my wagon with WD-40, lol.

I mean.... FWIW... it dissolves it.
  3.
If nothing else works, you can always use 220 grit on a palm sander real lightly; just don't get carried away...
  4.
Acetone should work well. Goof Off may be another good option. Either way, do it before you have tires mounted, so you don't get anything on them.
